Theological Test - Question 6

We posted the questions from a recent Ligonier theological test survey, and now we want to answer the questions to see how our readers answered.  We also show the results Ligonier found in their survey.

The sixth question was “Sin is a form of treason against God.”  The right answer is that this is true, so Christians should answer “strongly agree”.

This may not be totally clear at first, and that’s evident by the wide disparity in the answers below.  We have to work through the meaning of sin and treason to determine if we agree with this statement.

The original Greek word for sin is hamartano, which means “to miss the mark, to violate God’s law.”  Whether we have violated the law that God wrote in our conscience or we are a Jew who violated the Mosaic Law that God wrote down, it is clear that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).

Treason means “the offense of acting to overthrow one's government or to harm or kill its sovereign; a violation of allegiance to one’s sovereign or to one’s state.”  In essence, when we sin, we are acting to overthrow God’s law.  We are, in effect, saying that WE are sovereign and can do as we please rather than follow the law God has given us.  This is the very definition of treason.  Therefore, sin is a form of treason against God.

As mentioned above, this question required a bit more thought, and it shows in the wide range of answers.
